"Evgeny Malkin isn't the only Russian eager to join the National Hockey League, despite having a signed contract with a Russian Super League team for the coming season.
Forwards Alexei Mikhnov and Andrei Taratukhin have each given 14 days notice to Yaroslavl Lokomotiv saying they will not play in Russia. Instead, Mikhnov is close to signing with the Edmonton Oilers while Taratukhin is expected to sign with the Calgary Flames.
Both players are high draft picks who played for Russia at the 2006 world championship. Taratukhin also played for his country at the Turin Winter Olympics. The Russian Ice Hockey Federation is aware of what's happening with both players but is more interested in trying to keep Malkin from signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins."
MODOJohan: Sergei Gonchar diskuterar Malkinaffären
"I'm sure he felt like (Magnitogorsk) helped him a lot," Gonchar said. "I don't know what to say. Maybe that's why he couldn't say no (to the new contract). When you feel like you're part of a family, maybe it's hard for you to reject them, even if he was only thinking NHL at that point. It's hard to say no when it's a family member, and even though it's not a family member asking him to sign the deal, he was there forever. He grew up there. Everyone in the organization knew him."
MODOJohan: Det verkar vara ungefär lika osäkert som tidigare, så någon upptadering av rang är det väl inte tal om. Däremot lite läsning, kanske.
"Malkin is believed to be lying low somewhere in North America as he awaits a resolution to what has become a transatlantic feud over the 20-year-old's future. Malkin bolted from his club during a tournament in Finland, with his clothes, passport and Canadian visa, and is now trying to get out of his contract with Magnitogorsk in order to join Pittsburgh."
