One player who has flown under the radar while becoming the sixth-highest scorer on the Marlies is winger Tanner MacMaster. The 24-year-old was brought over in a trade midway through last season and his 21 points in 40 games this season has already eclipsed the 17 points he scored in 55 games last season.

He had a nine-game point streak throughout November that was the team’s longest this season and he’s contributing again with six points in his last six games. Not bad at all for an undrafted graduate of Quinnipiac University who struggled with the Utica Comets before being dealt to the Marlies.

“Last year was a tough year for me,” said MacMaster. “But I knew what type of player I was.”

It’s tough to predict what MacMaster’s ceiling will be, given that he doesn’t yet have two full seasons of professional hockey under his belt. Even MacMaster admitted that he struggled last season to adapt to the pro game after averaging 38 games in each of his four college seasons.

So perhaps what we’re seeing is indeed MacMaster’s ceiling: a feisty, smallish AHL winger who is, in his own estimation, “an energy guy” who can contribute in streaks offensively.

He’s young, but Marlies teammates still flock to him. MacMaster is always one of the last off the ice in practice, sometimes spending half an hour in small, competitive games.

While he doesn’t have nearly the same physical presence that Marlies veteran Rich Clune does, there’s a comparison to be made there in the aforementioned energy that Clune brings to the team, and how MacMaster wants to have a positive impact on his teammates on and off the ice.

MacMaster said the Clune comparison might indeed be warranted, as he’s spent time observing Clune and understands how his upbeat attitude at any point in the season can work wonders to keep teammates’ spirits up.

“I watch players like that and see what different aspects they can bring,” said MacMaster.
